Everyone likes to mix things up a little bit, right? Whilst scrapbooking and papercraft are my first loves, I can also sew and it feels good to dust off the sewing machine and create something different. I like to create useful projects, such as this pin cushion, rather than decorative dust collectors! Having once had to have a sewing pin surgically removed from my foot, I know only too well how useful pin cushions are!

The other reason I have a new-found enthusiasm to sew, is the availability of Stampin’ Up!s wonderful Designer Fabric, which is currently available in 6 collections coordinating with various product suites. My retro bird was created with ‘Spice Cake’ Designer Fabric, featured on page 11 of the current Australian Summer Mini Catalogue. There are 5 other Designer Fabrics, featured on page 140 of the current Australian Idea Book & Catalogue.

I also created a fabric box, pictured below, using the ‘Spice Cake’ Designer Fabric, and I will be playing with some variations on this idea and sharing them with you in the coming days. Somehow it seems appropriate to start the new year showcasing cards celebrating new life. Stampin;’ Up! have created a gorgeous suite of products called ‘Nursery Nest’, which you can check out on pages 52 and 53 of the current Australian Idea Book & Catalogue. One of our lovely Paper Angels, Anna, has created some cards to share with us, including this pretty card featuring birds from the ‘Aviary’ Stamp Set, ‘Nursery Nest’ DSP and a sweet trio of colours – ‘Pear Pizazz’, ‘Blushing Bride’ and ‘Perfect Plum’.

Our very own ‘Paper Angel’ Ursula is teaching in the South Bank Christmas Craft Studio in Brisbane! Ursula is teaching a Christmas Bunting Banner, which was inspired by a neat banner we made at our Convention in Melbourne. The craft studio is in the Suncorp Piazza and as you can see the event styling is just simply gorgeous! I am Ursula’s ‘helper bee’ next week when she helps some more lucky crafters (age 12 – adult) create a Christmas Banner, Wednesday 21st 2pm and Friday 23rd 10 am and 2pm.

We had a ball yesterday; donning our fun pink aprons, taking some fun photo shots, & helping people create the banner of course.

A quick post today after a super big day, including a visit to ‘South Bank Christmas Craft Studio’ which I will blog about in more detail tomorrow.

Isn’t this the most elegant ‘treat pouch’ ever! Created to package 2 delicious cookies, I received this from Pauline & Cheryl. I love how well ‘Pear Pizazz’ and ‘Whisper White’ team up, together with a touch of bling using the adhesive rhinestones!

I have been receiving some lovely cards in the mail, so I thought I would share one that I received from Debbie. How super clever is this punch art, where Debbie has used the stocking punch upside down to create a ‘Rudolph Head’. Rudolph looks so cheeky – I love it!

Punch Art is so creative and is something that all ages enjoy. School Holidays is a great time to pull out your punches and scrap card stock for the kids to use – I am constantly amazed at their creativity! Likewise I have seen some outstanding Punch Art accents made by adults, as seen here by Debbie.

Yesterday our local scout group held their Christmas Concert at a local Retirement Village, which whilst catering for the needs of migrants born in The Netherlands, also welcomes people other than those of Dutch origin. This was the first year the concert had been held anywhere other than the scout hall and it turned out to be a great success, with many residents and their visitors clearly enjoying themselves. As well as sharing the concert with the community, Scouting Families also baked traditional Christmas Cookies called a Pepernoten. It was funny how we all managed to make cookies that all looked different to each other despite working from the same recipe! There were several emergency calls between families, asking if they were making them correctly. We packages the Pepernoten in bags to give to the residents and my daughter helped me make a few dozen tags using the ‘Welcome Christmas’ Stamp Set, stamped in Whisper White Craft Ink then embossed with ‘Heat & Stick Power’ and ‘Dazzling Diamonds Glitter’. It was great to use a ‘snow inspired’ Christmas stamp, which might not get used so much in an Australian Summer Christmas!

A big thank you and congratulations to the Scout Leaders & Committee for organising such a great concert and for the inspired decision to make it a community event. It was clear that it was much appreciated by the residents.

A couple of Scouting Mums asked how I made the cards and I replied ‘well I just stamped them, put powdered glue on them, then glittered them’. I had to smile as they looked at me incredulously. Apparently, they thought I would end the sentence with ‘well its JUST a sticker’. Honestly I hope I get the opportunity one day to show how easy these tags really were! It always looks and sounds complicated, but when shown how, stamping is so easy and fun.

Thank you Mary, who made this beautiful Christmas Basket containing shortbread. Mary made up her own pattern for the box using A4 cardstock. For those of you that have been around Stampin’ Up! a while, you might recognise a retired colour, ‘Brocade Blue’, which if you are trying to recreate this, might find ‘Wisteria Wonder’ a suitable current colour replacement. In fact Mary made these in a few different colours and they all looked beautiful.

Mary has used one of my emerging favourite stamp sets, ‘Beautiful Season’, which Susan recently used for her spectacular bird house. Stampin’ Up! embossing folders create the great texture to the box and oval journalling tag. Imagine the delight when you present your friends with such a darling box filled with a special treat!

My friend and long standing hostess Jenny made this gorgeous hanging medallion banner for me, which she shared at our morning tea yesterday.  Scoring the DSP every centimeter, Jenny was able to create concertina strips, which she then fanned out to create medallions which she then secured with cardstock discs on both sides. This is not a fast project by any means, but certainly looks impressive if you are prepared to spend the time. How lucky was I to be given one! Jenny also made a beautiful fabric banner with the words ‘Merry Christmas’ all cut out using Bigz Big Shot Dies, and at the same time taught 2 demonstrators present including myself that you can emboss by tipping embossing powder onto the multipurpose adhesive sheets! I guess whatever makes the embossing powder stick in order to heat with the heat gun, will work? I’ll have to have a go at that!

I had a lovely morning this morning, meeting with some friends and exchanging small hand made gifts. I gave a silicone spatula with the recipe for ‘Peppermint Bark’ wrapped around the handle, bundled together in an extended ‘pillow box’. I had a lovely morning this morning, meeting with some friends and exchanging small hand made gifts. I gave a silicone spatula with the recipe for ‘Peppermint Bark’ wrapped around the handle, bundled together in an extended ‘pillow box’. I used Stampin’ Up!s regular pillow box die, however, I cut a 12.2 cm strip of A4 cardstock and only ran half the die through, so that the rounded cut & score lines were complete on one end only. I then turned the cardstock strip over and rotated it 180 degrees, repeating the process of running the die half way through. Lastly I used my bone folder to join the straight score lines! I came up with this idea after looking at a ‘Baci’ Gift Box which was a LONG tube of ‘Baci’ chocolates and thinking how great it would be to be able to make that. In a light-bulb moment, I realised that I could indeed make a long pillow box tube using the technique just described. Naturally, you can make any length you desire, so this has opened heaps of possibilities and made my pillow box die quite a valuable tool.

I decorated the extended pillow box with the ‘Top Note’ and ‘Petite Pennant’ Dies, together with a plastic candy cane, seam binding ribbon and a store bought ‘Peppermint Bark’ in one of Stampin’ Up!s small cello bags. Peppermint Bark, in case you didn’t know, is made with melted chocolate with crushed candy canes scattered over the top. Sometimes there is a layer of dark and white chocolate, other times just white chocolate. You can find a simple recipe for Peppermint Bark, by clicking HERE.

Lastly, I have to say how thrilled I am to have a creative way of using all those frustratingly sticky candy canes that I know my children will be bringing home from school! I never really much liked them, but now there is a great ‘Peppermint Bark’ recipe and also, courtesy of my friend Jenny, I learned today that there is actually a religious significance to candy canes. If you research ‘Candy Canes’ you will find reference to shepherd’s staffs, letter ‘J’ for Jesus, red stripes signifying the wounds Jesus suffered etc. So, I now have a new found respect for the candy cane!

Inspired by a demonstrator swap I received from Robyn Williams at the recent Brisbane Stampin’ Up! Regional Training, I have created literally dozens of these ‘candy canes’ with tag and stocking topper. These were created with the matching ‘Simply Stockings’ Stamp Set and Hand Held Punch, along with the Bigz ‘Two Tags’ Die which is run through the Big Shot. The narrow cello bags are filled with ‘green fruit sticks’ and ‘Christmas M & M’s’.

As well as creating this as a small gift for my children to give friends at school, I also created this project with out local Cub Scouts! I suspected it would be a hit as it contained lollies and guess what – I was right.

So, a big thanks to Robyn! Another benefit of being a Stampin’ up! Demonstrator – lots of inspiring people and ideas to share!

Take a peek at page 10 of the NEW Summer Mini Catalogue and you will find a great example of weaving used on a scrapbooking page. This is my version of weaving using the lovely ‘Spice Cake’ Designer Series Paper, featuring Soft Suede, More Mustard, Pool Party, Pear Pizazz, River Rock and Very Vanilla. I couldn’t believe my luck that we now have a gorgeous Vanilla Velvet Ribbon, which simply was perfect given the photographs and the title – meant to be!

I recently purchased the Easter Stamp Set, ‘Everybunny’, which as it turns out can be used at other times other than Easter. I stamped the image with Espresso Ink and then coloured using inks and a blender pen, cut out and adhered to the journalling tag. As you can see, I am no watercolouring star, however, it just seems to work – lucky watercolouring is rustic!

‘Letter It’ on page 102 of the Idea Book & Catalogue, is one of many great options Stampin’ Up! has delivered scrapbookers to answer that constant struggle to have lettering without limits! Imagine how easy it will be and how much money you will save, when you can create letters in the colours you want! If you need extra vowels or consonants, you simply make them! Gold!

On Saturday I held a launch for the NEW Summer Mini Catalogue. We created two make and takes, as pictured above. The first card was ‘CASED’ from page 14 of this publication, featuring ‘Fabulous Florets’ Stamp Set and some lovely bright happy colours! The second project was a ‘Sweet Treat Box’ made with the NEW “Candy Wrapper Bigz L Die’ on page 13. I am addicted to this fabulous die, which can either look like candy, or if you fold the ends differently, can also look like a bon bon! I hope I’m not teasing you too much to say that I have figured out how to make a larger version using the same die! Perhaps that is a good subject for my next video?

Each month, demonstrators are sent a magazine from Stampin’ Up! called ‘Impressions’. This publication contains a variety of articles designed to help both hobby and business demonstrators run their business, so naturally there are heaps of creative ideas using Stampin’ Up! tools and materials. The December issue really caught my attention with this simple but totally sweet banner, made with punched flowers made with the NEW ‘Blossom Bouquet Triple Layer Punch’. Please note that the Stampin’ Up! channel is a US site, so there are some products demonstrated that are not yet available in Australia. I will only point you to products that I can help you with. If you are looking for these punches, they are in the current Idea Book & Catalogue on page 151.

I recreated Stampin’ Up!s project for my Summer Mini Catalogue Launch over the weekend. I was able to buy 2 cream filled sponges, one of which I cut down to a smaller round. I then used Betty Crocker Ready Made Vanilla Icing to smother the tower of cake! My daughter Nicole helped me by punching and layering the blossoms, which I then connected together. We made 2 of each shape and glued them together with Tombo. This enabled us to create connected rings, similar to keychain rings, between the rhinestone flowers. Whilst our ‘Impressions’ magazine used a narrow ribbon, I found ‘Vanilla Seam Binding Ribbon’ worked really well, giving a lovely floating delicate appearance.

Next time, I plan to experiment with this idea and make banners which include names or occasions. Imagine, that you can either reuse these banners or add them as a memento to a scrapbook page celebrating that event! Double Duty – we like that!

A reminder that there is an exclusive Paper Angels demonstrator class this Saturday 26th November at 2.30pm, where guest teacher Susan Martin will show us how to create her gorgeous birdhouse as well as an amazing gatefold box. Places are limited and RSVP is essential. Cost of class is $10 and a materials list will be sent to those that register. If you do not have any of the cardstock, papers or embellishments; a $5 material kit will be made available if requested. Susan will be providing the twigs (I asked if she would do this because the twig is really nice – apparently it is a mango twig!) and I will provide the seam binding ribbon and glass glitter.

Unfortunately, it is necessary for me to change the date of this month’s meeting, which was to have been on Wednesday 30th November. I would like to reschedule the meeting for 7pm this Saturday 26th. We will be making the 2 make & takes I plan to run as a Summer Mini Catalogue Launch. If you are planning to attend both the class and the meeting, you are most welcome to stay and have pizza!
